The MARS mission has changed over the years from the morale and welfare traffic we handled during and after the Vietnam War era, due to the mission requirements of our armed forces. However, it's still part of our expanding mission.

Today, the USAF MARS provides contingency communications support to U.S. government operations and authorized civilian government stations. This includes mission and morale phone patches from military aircraft, mission and emergency communications support for the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and others using voice and digital.

The Military Auxiliary Radio System is a Department of Defense sponsored program consisting of licensed Amateur radio operators who are interested in military communications. They contribute to the MARS mission providing auxiliary or emergency communications on a local, national, and international basis as an adjunct to normal communications.

To become a member of the USAF MARS, applicants must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.

  • Be a United States citizen or resident alien.

  • Possess a valid amateur radio license issued by the Federal Communications Commission.

  • Possess a station capable of operating on MARS HF frequencies.

  • Agree to operate in accordance with the rules and regulations governing MARS with a minimum of 12 hours participation per calendar quarter.
  • Join the USAF MARS, TODAY!
